ALFAFAR

The village has a population of about 21,000 inhabitants. It lies only 6 km south of Valencia, at an altitude of 6 m above the sea level. A large part of the municipality lies within the Albufera Natural Park and is occupied by rice fields.

How to arrive:

The municipality of Alfafar is crossed by the V-31, which links with the A-7 and AP-7 at Silla; the N-340 (former Royal Valencia – Madrid Road), now an inter-city route; and the CV-401, which links Alfafar with El Saler and CV-500. It also has a railway station, shared with Benetússer, serviced by the C-1 and C-2 RENFE “Cercanías” line.

Gastronomy:

“All i pebre” and paella are the most notable local dishes.

Places of interest:

The Parish Church of Saint Sebastian and Our Lady of El Don (18th century), a recently-restored effigy found during the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia, is the village’s most prominent monument. The municipally-owned “Edgar Neville” art gallery is worth a visit. A wide range of art is exhibited. On a cultural level, visitors are recommended to visit the Cultural Athenaeum, which hosts talks on local issues, and the Musical Athenaeum, which is home to Alfafar’s municipal band. The “Parque Acosa” neighbourhood stands out for its traditional Valencian architecture. Local natural sites within the municipality of Alfafar include the Albufera lake, which has been declared a Natural Park (a protected area of great natural and biological interest).

Festivities:

“Las Fallas” are held in honour of Saint Joseph from 15th to 19th March. On the last day of the festivities, the “Fallas” monuments are burnt in the streets. The main festivities are held in early September in honour of Our Lady of the Don. The festivities of El Tremolar are held during the first week of July in honour of Our Lady of the Forsaken. The festivities of the Orba neighbourhood are celebrated during the first week in July (Parque Alcosa).
