LA RIBERA BAIXA

The final stages of the Xuquer river pass through the Ribera Baixa, flowing on to the Mediterranean sea at the Cullera estuary. This region is predominantly flat, but is flanked on the right by the Corbera mountains, with heights reaching 500 m just a short distance from the coast. In this fertile area, the rice harvest alternates with the orange harvest in the south near to the Albufera lake. Part of the Albufera National Park is made up of the villages of Cullera, Sueca, Albalat de la Ribera and Sollana. An interesting historical and artistic heritage, excellent beaches of fine, golden sand, bathed in the waters of the Mediterranean, natural areas of great interest such as the Albufera National Park, a vast calendar of festivals and an unbeatable range of gastronomic delicacies make the Ribera Baixa without doubt one of the most interesting Valencian regions for tourism.

How to arrive:

The Ribera Baixa has two major connecting roads: the A7 highway which travels from the north to the south of region and which connects, in only a few minutes, the main villages of Ribera Baixawith the capital of the province, Valencia. The second is the N-322, which travels through towns such as Sollana, Sueca, Cullera and Favara and leaves the area heading south towards Gandia. A network of secondary roads serves both the coast (where important tourist districts include El Perelló, Les Palmares and Mareny) and villages located in the interior. The rail network connects the towns of Valencia and Gandiaand also stops in the main villages of the Ribera region. Numerous bus routes connect both Valencia and many other Spanish cities with the touristic centre of the region, Cullera.

Gastronomy and events:

One must not forget that Sueca is the major production hub of Spanish ricethus, gastronomically,it is inevitable that the region of Ribera Baixa stands out mainly for the variety of rice dishes which originate there. Some of the most well-known dishes include paella, baked rice (arroz al horno), rice soup (arrozcaldoso) andseafood rice (arroz a banda). There are many other methodsof preparation also used, whilst the products unique to the region such as the excellent fish and seafood are outstanding. Without any doubt the star dish of the region is the popular all ipebre which consists of potatoes and eels, boiled with garlic and red pepper, which stands alongside espardenya, prepared with potatoes, eels, garlic, rabbit and eggs. To complete the great variety of local dishes is a selection of traditional desserts and cakes, including coques fines i de carabassa, pastissets de nadal, rotllos de SantBlai and of course the sweet pumpkin dish, arnadi, a typical dessert found both in this region and in La Costera
